A holiday at home or abroad, a move, a wedding, an extra car for a few hours or perhaps the need to quickly expand the car fleet for a short period of time? This is when we most often use short-term (1-30 days) car rental. This rent-a-car service is gaining more and more users - in the lives of private individuals and companies, there are many situations in which a tried-and-tested new rental car proves to be the preferred alternative to another - even one's own - means of transport. If you add to this a minimum of formalities, attractive prices and the reliability of regularly serviced cars under guarantee, it becomes clear that short-term rental is really worthwhile.

What is short-term rental?

Short-term rental is a service whereby a car is rented to an individual or a company by a specialised rental company, usually for a period of 1 to 30 days. This type of rental is characterised by the least amount of paperwork, price per rental day and the application by the rental company of certain contractual conditions (age of the driver, mileage limit, excess, etc.).

Although most of us associate short-term rental mainly with holiday trips to another country, this form of car rental is also very popular, e.g. when a need arises (moving house or needing to transport bulky items) or when the company's fleet turns out to be temporarily too small.

How does short-term rental work?

In a nutshell - as simple as possible! Nowadays, everyone is concerned with time and fast and efficient service. This is why the red-tape is reduced to a minimum for short-term rentals.

In most cases, in order to rent a car, you need to use one of the brokerage websites (aggregating the offers of various rental companies) or go directly to the website of a proven rent a car company. We recommend Inter Fleet, of course!

At Inter Fleet, the booking process is very simple - using the tool on the home page, you enter the booking period. Then, you choose the car you need and the additional services. Finally, you fill in your details and make the payment.

Be sure to check the conditions offered by the car hire company in terms of the age and number of drivers, mileage limit, fuel policy, deposit policy as well as other additional charges before you book the car.

At the indicated time, you pick up the car based on the handover protocol. The return of the car is basically a mirror image of the pick-up - again, you arrange the time and place, then hand the car over to a member of staff and sign the handover report. If it so happens that an employee is not on site when you return the car (e.g. in the middle of the night) - in this case, the keys should be put in a special box.

What are the advantages of short-term rentals?

There are many advantages to renting a car, but here we have decided to limit ourselves to the 5 most important ones:

you use the car when you really need it and only pay for that time;

you have a new, regularly serviced and reliable car with low mileage and under warranty;

you just fill up the tank and drive off - no need to worry about insurance, servicing, repairs or bumps;

you can test drive your dream car before you decide to buy it;

you drive the vehicle you need at the time you want it.

Who can rent a car with Inter Fleet?

In principle, anyone can use our service provided that he or she meets the hirer and driver requirements, which at Inter Fleet are as follows:

you are at least 21 years old;

for an individual: you are required to have two pieces of photo identification - a valid Driving Licence with at least one year's driving experience and at least 21 years of age and an ID card. For citizens of countries outside the EU, it is necessary to have a Passport and an International Driving Licence. The condition for rental is the possession of a credit/debit card which will process the rental payment and a cash deposit.

for companies: it is required to have a set of documents consisting of a tax number (NIP) certificate, a REGON certificate, a certificate of entry in the Business Activity Register or a certificate from the National Court Register (not older than 3 months); authorisation for the person signing the contract/collecting the car to enter into the commitment on behalf of the company.

Things to consider when renting a car on a short-term basis

We have prepared a table below to ensure that you have checked all the relevant points at the signing stage and when you collect the car.

Mileage allowanceestimate how many kilometres you intend to drive, add about 10% and check that you are within the limit; if not, increase the limit
Additional chargesSome rent-a-car companies charge separately, e.g. for cleaning and washing the car after return, or apply extra charges when there is more than one driver; therefore, to avoid surprises, ask about all costs not included in the rental price.
Deposit / Card Depositmost car hire companies will take some form of security from the customer - this may be a deposit or funds blocked on a credit card - make sure you know how much the security is, and that you have the appropriate amount on your card
Excessusually the base rental price includes a limited version of insurance that provides for some form of excess in the event of a collision or accident - check the amount and preferably take out all-inclusive insurance so that your liability is reduced almost to zero
Vehicle collection protocolwhen you collect the vehicle, inspect it very carefully inside and out; ask the employee to note all, even the smallest scratches and dents, upholstery damage or other visible problems; check whether the car has the legally required equipment, as well as whether it has a spare/accessory wheel and the tools necessary to fit it.
